ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF SOLITUDE
PRECIS ENGLISH 4

Johnston’s continuous focus throughout this criticism is to bring out points that prove “One Hundred Years of Solitude” is an epic. He brings out the fact that the story, like many other epics, focuses around a specific culture of people, how they lived, and how a main cast affects the lives of those around them. As Odysseus is for the Greeks, the Buendias are for the Colombians. The criticism also states that the nonstop wars in the novel reflect the Civil Wars going on at the time of Colombia’s development. This is a reference to real time, causing the story to be more realistic. An interesting idea brought out by the author is that “the Buendia family” is quite simply a metaphor for the history of Colombia, from its Independence to its colonial period. Overall, Johnston fulfills his goal in proving the novel to be an epic.
